ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

Not all children with ADHD are hyperactive or impulsive. Children with these characteristics are often diagnosed much earlier than those who have the inattentive type of ADHD. This type can also be a significant problem in that children who do not pay attention well in school have much more difficulty in achieving well and their learning can be compromised. They must work much harder than their peers to achieve at the same level.

A typical profile for children with ADHD, with or without hyperactivity and impulsivity includes poor working memory, slow processing speed, difficulty with sustained attention, and difficulty with shifting of attention. The diagnosis is made on the basis of history, observations, interview, and test results.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

Learning disabilities can adversely affect learning or the demonstration of learning on tests. The learning disabilities can be in the area of memory, language, conceptualization, visual-motor skills, integration of new material, auditory or visual processing, as well as other areas of functioning. The earlier the disabilities are diagnosed, the earlier the solutions can be developed.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Pervasive developmental disorders such as autism or Asperger's Disorder are no longer rare conditions. Early diagnosis and intervention is essential. I have extensive experience in working with children who have behaviors consistent with autism spectrum disorders.

Children on the spectrum have varying degrees of difficulty with social communication and interactions with peers even if they are bright and talented. A thorough assessment of their strengths and weaknesses can assist parents to help their children develop better skills to cope with their day to day life stresses and to take advantage of educational opportunities.
